AI video clipping on your own computer
ClipMill is a free, open-source alternative to Opus Clip for turning long video recordings into captioned short clips. It is a desktop app for Apple silicon Macs, Windows x64 in beta, and Linux x86_64. The default workflow runs transcription, clip suggestions, editing and export on your computer.
Bring a podcast, interview or other English recording built around speech. A local Qwen model can suggest and review moments; you choose what to keep, correct the captions, adjust framing and export an MP4 for YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels or TikTok. A built-in picker is available without the editorial model.
The local workflow has no ClipMill subscription. Processing depends on your computer's memory, disk space and speed. Initial setup downloads components and models. See the current installers and installation requirements before choosing a download.
ClipMill and OpusClip compared
OpusClip also offers a free plan. Its official pricing page, checked on 18 October 2026, lists 60 monthly credits, watermarked output, no editing and a three-day export window for that tier. Paid plans add features such as editing, watermark removal and social publishing, depending on the plan.
| What matters | ClipMill | OpusClip |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free local workflow; optional cloud providers can charge separately | Free tier and paid subscription plans |
| Processing workflow | Install the desktop app and use local models | Upload or import a source into its online service |

ClipMill's source code is published under AGPL-3.0-only. Its desktop workflow gives you a different way to produce clips; it does not include every feature of OpusClip. Check the linked pricing page for current plan details.
Make your first clip with local AI
- Install ClipMill. Pick your operating system on the download page, then finish the component and model downloads.
- Open a recording. Use a local video or import a YouTube video you have permission to use. YouTube import needs an internet connection and Node.js 22 or newer.
- Review suggested moments. Check the transcript and the surrounding source. Keep a useful suggestion, reject a weak one, or select your own moment.
- Finish captions and framing. Correct names and numbers, adjust the crop, and choose a vertical, square or landscape composition.
- Export and watch the result. Save an MP4 with burned-in captions and optional SRT or WebVTT subtitle files. Review the finished file before uploading it.

Choose the workflow that fits your recordings
ClipMill is a useful option when you want free AI video clipping on your own computer, access to the application source, and control over captions and framing. Once setup is complete, a local recording can be analysed and exported offline. Local processing and connected actions explains the differences.
Allow for setup time and several gigabytes of model storage. CPU-only processing can take many minutes. The current Mac build needs Apple silicon and macOS 14 or later; there is no Intel Mac installer. Windows support is in beta. The current speech workflow is focused on English, and direct channel publishing is still in development.
Compare OpusClip's hosted plans if multilingual captions, a team workspace or built-in social scheduling are priorities. ClipMill works well as a different route from a local source to a finished MP4. Neither a clip suggestion nor a score guarantees audience growth; review the result yourself.
